To the West lie the tranquil waters of the Caribbean, bordered by sandy beaches or cliffs and dotted with coastal villages. From Pointe du Bout there is a spectacular view of the beautiful bay which surrounds the island’s capital city, Fort de France. To the North lies unspoilt rain forest, streams and Mount Pelée, a live volcano.
The childhood home of Napoleon’s Josephine, one time residence of the artist Paul Gauguin and inspiration for many of his paintings, Martinique offers history as well as beauty. In the South the beach of Les Salines stands comparison with the very best. In the East lies Josephine’s Bathtub, a shallow area of sea ideal for bathing but which requires a boat journey out to sea in order to reach it.

Cap Est Lagoon Resort & Spa - 5 star, Le François

Rooms: All 50 rooms are suites (Garden, Deluxe and Executive) with telephone, fax and internet connection, plasma screen TV, DVD-CD player, air conditioning, hairdryer, safe, maxi bar, balcony or terrace. Deluxe and Executive suites also have a small private pool and outdoor shower.
Hotel: lounge bar, 2 restaurants (Lagoon Restaurant and Gourmet Restaurant), fine wine cellar, large swimming pool, tennis court, watersports centre, fitness room, book and video library. Spa by Guerlain (balneotherapy, hydrotherapy, massages and hammam baths).

This hotel, a member of Relais & Châteaux, lies beside a sandy beach and offers pure luxury.  In our opinion, it is easily the best hotel on Martinique.

The 137 rooms and suites offer views over the gardens, the beach or Fort de France bay. The view from the swimming pool is spectacular and the beach superb. A lovely atmosphere.

Plein Soleil – Le François

Far from the tourist areas, 6km down a rough track from the main road, Plein Soleil is quite idyllic. The 16 créole style rooms and suites (some with their own small pool) are of a very high standard and the restaurant is superb. The hotel enjoys a wonderful view of the Baie du François and is a haven of beauty, peace and quiet.

Le Domaine Saint Aubin – 3 star, Petite Rivière Salée

A unique experience at a splendid old colonial manor house. In the north of the island, a short drive away from the nearest beach, a friendly welcome awaits from Joëlle and Laurent . The 11 rooms in the main house are all furnished with 19^th century style. A step back in time with modern conveniences!

Hotel Carayou - 3 star, Pointe du Bout

This lovely hotel has 201 rooms, all with views over the sea or the gardens. It is built right on the edge of the marina in Pointe du Bout, one of the most popular and lively places in the island. Situated in a tropical garden which opens directly on to a small beach.

Frégate Bleue – 3 star, Le François

This friendly, family-run hotel has just 7 rooms and is a member of Relais du Silence. Antique furniture is found throughout this atmospheric hotel, which is a fine Créole house situated in the middle of a tropical garden. There is a lovely view from the hotel out to the islands off Le François.

Le Domaine de Sainte-Marie – Sainte-Marie

Shared facilities: swimming pool, tennis court

56 self-catering villas spread among 30 acres of tropical gardens on a hillside leading up from the beach. Villas accommodate up to 6 guests. La Pagerie – 3 star, Pointe du Bout

Very good value for money.   Access to the beach is via a sister hotel, Les Amandiers, which is just across a small road. The restaurant at Les Amandiers is also open to guests at the Caribia Hotel.   As all suites have a kitchenette, this hotel may be used for self-catering if required.

Le Corail – 2 star, Sainte-Luce

26 studios and apartments, most of which have a sea view and face the beautiful Diamant rock. A lovely sandy beach is a short walk away. The hotel is situated in a residential area with no shops nearby. Car hire is recommended for guests here.

La Caravelle – 2 star, Tartane

Hotel: restaurant, lounge

This friendly, family-run hotel has just 14 rooms all of which face the sea. The restaurant, La Table de Mamy Nounou, is well known locally for its quality. La Caravelle is located on the side of a hill and the lovely sandy beach is a 5 minute walk downhill from the hotel.

Somewhere special, perhaps best combined with a stay at a mainland hotel.  Ilet Oscar is a small island with just one authentic colonial building and very little else! The island is deserted apart from the day trippers who arrive every day to share the beach! There is nowhere else to go on the island so we recommend an all-inclusive basis.   Truly a get away from it all experience.     There is no telephone and the electricity is solar power.   One warning - the tap water is not drinkable here, but there is always a plentiful supply of bottled water.
